Klaus Dittrich Communication

Communication Coaching Consulting

Words create reality.

Klaus Dittrich

Klaus Dittrich is a specialist in narrative competence, adaptive persuasion, framing, priming and communication accommodation.

PR consultant, mediator, journalist. Executive coaching for everyone who wants impact.

In short: Klaus Dittrich helps leaders, spokespeople and works councils communicate with impact in interviews, negotiations, meetings and on stage. He combines five approaches from communication psychology and rhetoric: telling stories people remember, adapting arguments to the listener, choosing words and frames deliberately, preparing the first impression on purpose, and meeting people at eye level in the way they speak.

Expertise

Five disciplines for communication that works

Each discipline rests on established research. In training, it becomes a practical skill you use in your next meeting, interview or negotiation.

Narrative competence

Narrative competence is the ability to present content as a story with a starting point, a conflict and a turning point, and to understand the stories others tell.

  • Give key messages a clear dramatic arc
  • Make figures tangible with concrete examples
  • Storytelling for speeches, pitches and change processes

Based on Fisher's narrative paradigm (1984); current research: meta-analysis by Braddock & Dillard (2016), review by Green & Appel (2024)

Adaptive persuasion

Adaptive persuasion means matching arguments, tone and evidence to the audience, the situation and the goal, instead of sending one fixed message to everyone.

  • Read your counterpart: checking facts or seeking orientation?
  • Choose the right route to persuasion and switch when needed
  • Take up objections without losing your line

Based on the Elaboration Likelihood Model (Petty & Cacioppo); current research: meta-analysis of 702 experiments on message matching, Joyal-Desmarais et al. (2022)

Framing

Framing is the selection and emphasis of certain aspects of an issue. The frame you choose determines how listeners interpret and judge the facts.

  • Choose your own terms instead of repeating the other side's frame
  • Media training for CEO and spokesperson interviews
  • Spot hostile frames early in crises and conflicts

Based on Tversky & Kahneman (1981) and Entman (1993); current research: meta-analyses by Steiger & Kühberger (2018) and Amsalem & Zoizner (2022), review by Kühberger (2023)

Priming

Priming is the effect by which an earlier stimulus, such as a word, a number or an image, unconsciously shapes how people perceive and judge the information that follows.

  • Set the opening deliberately: first word, first number, first image
  • Anchor negotiations with the first number on the table
  • Shape terms and the agenda before the meeting starts
Try it in the priming lab →

Based on semantic priming (Meyer & Schvaneveldt, 1971) and the anchoring effect (Tversky & Kahneman, 1974); current research: Semantic Priming Project (Hutchison et al., 2013), Many Labs replication of anchoring (Klein et al., 2014)

Communication accommodation

Communication accommodation describes how people move their way of speaking towards a conversation partner (convergence) or deliberately set themselves apart (divergence).

  • Adjust pace, vocabulary and tone with intent
  • Build trust in difficult conversations
  • Translate expert language without talking down

Based on Communication Accommodation Theory (Giles); current research: Giles, Edwards & Walther (2023), a review after 50 years of research

Adaptive persuasion navigator

One message. Four routes to a yes.

Your audience decides how you should argue. Two questions tell you which route works: how much does the topic matter to them, and how much time, knowledge and attention can they give it? Pick an audience or set the dials yourself and watch the same message about a new shift model change.

Audience
Motivation Does the topic matter to them?
Ability Time, knowledge, attention
Stance Where do they start?
Motivation highlow lowhigh Ability

Recommended route

Structure

Evidence

Stance
Balanced message: raise the strongest counter-argument yourself and answer it.
Example message: introducing a new shift model
"The pilot line cut overtime and sick days. The open question is weekend cover, and here is how the new rota solves it. Look at the figures and judge for yourself."

Names and figures in the example messages are fictitious and for illustration only.

Based on the Elaboration Likelihood Model (Petty & Cacioppo, 1986), inoculation theory (McGuire, 1961) and research on one- and two-sided messages (Allen, 1991); current research: meta-analysis on message matching, Joyal-Desmarais et al. (2022).

Priming lab

What comes first shapes what follows.

Four small experiments to try yourself. They show how the first impression shapes how you perceive everything after it, and how to use that in negotiations, interviews and meetings.

Reputation

Crisis and sustainability communication

Sharpen messages under pressure, test frames before they go public, and communicate sustainability credibly without greenwashing traps.

AI-Assisted Trainings

More practice time with AI. Feedback with experience.

Communication is learned by practising under realistic pressure. AI sparring partners make that possible between sessions, as often as you like. The analysis, the feedback and the strategy stay with me.

Media and crisis

AI interview simulation

An AI plays the critical journalist, asks follow-up questions and presses on evasive answers. You practise key messages and bridging phrases until they stick. In coaching we review the recording for frames and traps.

Negotiation

Negotiation sparring

The AI takes the other side, such as management, procurement or a sceptical committee, at a level of toughness you choose. You test anchors, objections and concessions before the real meeting.

Language

Framing and priming analysis

Speeches, statements and press releases are checked in advance for negations, borrowed frames, trigger words and first impressions.

Support

Training between sessions

Individual exercises with AI feedback between two coaching sessions. Short units, measurable progress and personal support over weeks instead of a single seminar day.

  1. Prepare

We define the situation, the counterpart and the goal, and configure the AI role.

  2. Practise

You train with the AI as often and as long as you like, by keyboard or by voice.

  3. Review

In coaching we review the results, sharpen your messages and plan the next step.

Data protection first. We work with anonymised or re-enacted cases and without confidential company data. We agree in advance which tools are used, with your data protection officer and works council if needed.

Formats

Fast to apply, accompanied over time

Instead of a single seminar day, the work happens in short, focused sessions with support during implementation.

One-day and multi-day seminars and retreat facilitation, in person, online or hybrid, in German or English.

BUSINESS COMMUNICATION CAMP

Two-day intensive training in rhetoric, influence, PR and resilience.

Coaching and shadowing

FAQ

Briefly explained

What is framing in communication?

Framing is the selection and emphasis of certain aspects of an issue, which shapes how listeners interpret and judge it. The same fact can lead to different decisions: a treatment with a 90 percent survival rate is judged more favourably than one with a 10 percent mortality rate, although both statements are identical.

What is priming?

Priming is the effect by which an earlier stimulus, such as a word, a number or an image, unconsciously shapes how people perceive and judge the information that follows. A well-known example is the anchoring effect: the first number in a negotiation shapes which amounts are later seen as high or low.

What is communication accommodation?

Communication accommodation describes how people adjust their speech towards a conversation partner (convergence) or deliberately set themselves apart (divergence). The concept comes from Communication Accommodation Theory, developed by social psychologist Howard Giles. Adjusting pace, vocabulary and tone builds trust and understanding.

What is adaptive persuasion?

Adaptive persuasion is the skill of matching arguments, tone and evidence to the audience, the situation and the goal, instead of delivering one fixed message to everyone. An adaptive communicator recognises whether a listener wants to examine facts or is looking for orientation, and chooses the route that fits.

What is narrative competence?

Narrative competence is the ability to present content as a coherent story with a starting point, a conflict and a turning point, and to understand the stories other people tell. Audiences remember stories far better than lists of facts. No narrative, no acceptance.

Who does Klaus Dittrich work with?

Klaus Dittrich works with executives, spokespeople, works councils and teams from companies, associations, trade unions and research institutions.

What are AI-assisted trainings?

AI-assisted trainings combine personal coaching with AI sparring partners. Between sessions, participants practise with AI roles such as a critical journalist or the other side in a negotiation. Klaus Dittrich handles the analysis, feedback and strategy in coaching. All work uses anonymised cases and no confidential company data.

Does Klaus Dittrich offer training in English?

Yes. Seminars, retreats and one-to-one coaching are available in German and English, in person, online or hybrid. Klaus Dittrich is based in Munich and Saarbrücken, Germany, and works across the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) and Latin America.

Terms and conditions for seminars

Clear rules for booking, cancellation and withdrawal. The essentials first: a seminar runs with 6 or more participants, you can cancel free of charge up to 6 weeks before the start, and you can send a substitute at any time at no extra cost.

Show full terms and conditions

This English version is provided for convenience. The German version is legally binding.

1. Scope

(1) These terms apply to all bookings of open seminars, camps and trainings (“seminars”) with KLAUS DITTRICH – Communication Coaching Consulting, owner Klaus Dittrich (“organiser”). The address is given in the legal notice.

(2) In-house trainings, one-to-one coaching and consulting are governed by individually agreed terms. Deviating terms of participants or their employers apply only if the organiser has expressly agreed to them in text form.

(3) A “consumer” is any natural person who books a seminar predominantly for private purposes (section 13 German Civil Code, BGB). A “business” is anyone who books in the course of their commercial or independent professional activity, or on behalf of a company, public authority or works council (section 14 BGB).

2. Registration and conclusion of contract

(1) The presentation of seminars on this website is not a binding offer. By sending the booking form, an email or a WhatsApp message you submit a binding registration.

(2) The contract is concluded only when the organiser confirms the registration in text form (booking confirmation). An automatic acknowledgement of receipt is not yet a booking confirmation.

(3) Seats are allocated in the order in which registrations are received. If a seminar is fully booked, you can join the waiting list. This is not binding until a seat is confirmed.

3. Prices, services and payment

(1) The prices per person shown on the website at the time of registration apply, plus statutory VAT. The early-bird price applies to registrations received up to six weeks before the seminar starts.

(2) The scope of services is set out in the seminar description. Travel, accommodation and meals are included only if the seminar description expressly says so.

(3) You will receive the invoice with the booking confirmation. It is payable without deduction within 14 days of receipt and in any case before the seminar starts. For short-notice bookings, the organiser may make participation conditional on receipt of payment.

4. Minimum number of participants

(1) Every seminar runs with a minimum of 6 participants.

(2) If the minimum is not reached, the organiser may cancel the seminar no later than 14 days before the start. You will be informed without delay.

(3) In that case you can choose a free transfer to another date, a credit for another seminar or a full refund of any payments within 14 days. Without a reply within 10 days, the payment will be refunded.

(4) The organiser may also run a seminar with fewer participants. This does not affect the services promised or the price.

5. Cancellation and changes by the organiser

(1) Cancellation for good cause. If a seminar cannot take place due to illness or accident of the trainer, force majeure (for example severe weather, strikes, fire, pandemic), official orders or the unavailability of the venue, it will be cancelled, if necessary at short notice. You will be informed as early as possible by email, phone or WhatsApp.

(2) Your options. Whenever the organiser cancels a seminar, you can choose between

  • a replacement date,
  • holding the seminar online, if the format is suitable,
  • a credit for another seminar, or
  • a full refund of any payments.

A switch to an online format or a replacement date requires your consent.

(3) Interruption. If a seminar has to be stopped while in progress, the missed part will be made up or refunded pro rata.

(4) Changes. Minor changes to the schedule, times, venue within the same city or individual content remain possible, provided they do not change the overall character of the seminar and are reasonable for you. You will be informed in good time.

(5) Further costs. Further claims, in particular for travel and accommodation costs or loss of working time, exist only in accordance with section 10 (liability). We recommend booking travel and hotels with free cancellation.

6. Withdrawal, rebooking and substitutes

(1) You can withdraw from the contract at any time before the seminar starts. Withdrawal must be made in text form (email is sufficient). The date of receipt by the organiser is decisive.

(2) In the event of withdrawal, the following fees apply, based on the agreed seminar price:

Withdrawal receivedFee
up to 42 days (6 weeks) before the startfree
41 to 15 days before the start50 %
14 days or less before the start, or no-show100 %

(3) You remain entitled to prove that the organiser incurred no loss or a significantly lower loss. If a freed seat can be filled from the waiting list, no withdrawal fee is charged and payments are refunded.

(4) Substitute. You can name a substitute free of charge at any time, even on the day of the seminar. The substitute assumes your rights and obligations.

(5) Rebooking. You can rebook once free of charge to another date of the same seminar up to 15 days before the start, subject to availability. After that, a rebooking counts as a withdrawal under paragraph 2.

(6) There is no entitlement to a pro-rata refund for individual seminar days not attended. The statutory right of withdrawal for consumers (section 7) remains unaffected.

7. Right of withdrawal for consumers

Consumers have a statutory right of withdrawal. Businesses have no right of withdrawal; section 6 applies to them.

Information on the right of withdrawal

Right of withdrawal. You have the right to withdraw from this contract within fourteen days without giving any reason. The withdrawal period will expire after fourteen days from the day of the conclusion of the contract.

To exercise the right of withdrawal, you must inform us (KLAUS DITTRICH – Communication Coaching Consulting, Klaus Dittrich, Franz-Joseph-Str. 11, 80801 München, Germany, email: klaus@klausdittrich.de, phone: +49 681 9331 5100) of your decision to withdraw from this contract by an unequivocal statement (for example a letter sent by post or an email). You may use the attached model withdrawal form, but it is not obligatory.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.

Effects of withdrawal. If you withdraw from this contract, we shall reimburse to you all payments received from you without undue delay and in any event not later than fourteen days from the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract. We will carry out such reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

If you requested to begin the performance of services during the withdrawal period, you shall pay us an amount which is in proportion to what has been provided until you have communicated to us your withdrawal from this contract, in comparison with the full coverage of the contract.

8. Trainings for works council members

(1) Seminars for works council members are designed as trainings within the meaning of section 37(6) of the German Works Constitution Act (BetrVG). The works council decides on attendance and necessity by resolution. Those registering confirm that a corresponding resolution exists or will be adopted in good time before the seminar.

(2) Under section 40 BetrVG, the costs are generally borne by the employer. On request, the invoice is addressed to the employer and documents for the release from work are provided. If the employer refuses to cover the costs, please inform the organiser without delay; in this case, free withdrawal under section 6 remains possible up to 15 days before the start.

9. Conduct of seminars, recordings and AI exercises

(1) Video and audio recordings in camera and interview training are used solely for analysis during the seminar. They are not published and are deleted after the seminar or, on request, handed over only to the person recorded.

(2) AI exercises and the AI VR simulation are voluntary. Please do not enter confidential company data or personal data of third parties in AI exercises; we work with anonymised cases. VR headsets can cause dizziness, nausea or headaches in some people. If you have health concerns, please do not take part in the VR exercise or stop it at any time; you will be offered an equivalent alternative.

(3) Participants who seriously disrupt a seminar may be excluded from further participation after a prior warning. There is then no entitlement to a refund.

10. Liability and disclaimers

(1) The organiser is liable without limitation for damage resulting from injury to life, body or health, for damage caused intentionally or through gross negligence, and under the German Product Liability Act.

(2) In cases of slight negligence, the organiser is liable only for breach of an essential contractual obligation whose fulfilment makes the proper performance of the contract possible in the first place and on whose compliance you may regularly rely (cardinal obligation). In this case, liability is limited to the foreseeable damage typical for the contract. Otherwise, liability for slight negligence is excluded.

(3) No guarantee of success. Seminars impart knowledge and train skills. No particular result is owed, for example in negotiations, interviews, crises, elections or in the effect on third parties. In particular, there is no guarantee that AI search systems or search engines will find, display or cite GEO-optimised content.

(4) No legal advice. Seminar content on legal topics, for example works constitution law, environmental and advertising claims, or liability and data protection in the use of AI, consists of practical introductions to the best of our knowledge. It does not replace legal advice in individual cases.

(5) No liability is accepted for items brought along, clothing and valuables, except in cases of intent or gross negligence. The organiser is not liable for services of third parties such as hotels, venues or means of transport.

(6) These limitations of liability also apply in favour of employees, actors and other agents of the organiser.

11. Copyright

Seminar materials, templates and presentations are protected by copyright. They may be used for your own professional purposes but may not be copied, passed on, published or used for your own trainings without written consent. Participants may not record the seminar.

12. Data protection

Personal data are processed only to handle the booking and run the seminar. Details are set out in the privacy notice.

13. Final provisions

(1) The law of the Federal Republic of Germany applies, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. For consumers, this choice of law applies only insofar as it does not deprive them of the protection of mandatory provisions of the law of the state in which they have their habitual residence.

(2) If the person booking is a merchant, a legal entity under public law or a special fund under public law, the place of jurisdiction is the organiser’s registered office.

(3) The organiser is neither willing nor obliged to take part in dispute resolution proceedings before a consumer arbitration board.

(4) Should individual provisions of these terms be invalid, the validity of the remaining provisions shall not be affected.
